How to Trash

How to Trash

It might seem quite obvious at first, but trashing and recycling is a nuanced art. Here are the simple steps for keeping your cans and bins in fighting shape and your yard clean as a whistle. Trust, there’s a reason for all of it.

First things first, Westlake has two pick-up days: Tuesday and Friday. That means your stuff goes out Monday night and Thursday night. Set your reminders.

Second thing first, TRASH CAN hinge goes toward your house! Very important so that all trash falls into the truck and doesn’t get bounced back out into our yards by the lid.

MONDAY NIGHT – You’re putting out your TRASH CAN and your BLUE AND YELLOW RECYCLING BINS. The blue and yellow bins can be in touching contact with each other, but the trash can must be separated from the blue/yellow bins by at least “a man’s width”, aka so that a man could walk between them. This is so the automated trash claw has room to open outwardly and then inwardly to grab the trash can. The blue/yellow bins are manually emptied. SWA recommends putting your trash can on one side of your driveway and the recycle bins on the other side.

THURSDAY NIGHT – You’re putting out your TRASH CAN, BULK and VEGETATION. Remember, TRASH CAN hinge points to your house. You can dispose of up to three BULK items, including appliances (doors off), furniture (duct tape one side of any glass), large household items (like doors) and less than two cubic yards of construction debris. VEGETATION should be laid out together and separate from trash can and/or bulk and less than six cubic yards.

Then bring in your empty cans and/or bins by the end of pick-up day. Et voila!

Lastly, to keep your cans and bins clean, I highly recommend: Bingenie. They come by every two months or every month, whatever you choose, and clean, de-odorize and sanitize your cans/bins. They are VERY communicative and transparent. They come on your trash/recycle day after pick-up and then automatically charge your account. For some reason I was expecting a hassle… it’s not. It’s a surprisingly seamless and effective service. You might pressure-wash your bins every once in a while but not at 200 degrees!
