Read for the Record Today

Today is Read for the Record® day! And Westlake should be particularly proud of its participation this year, we have a ton of volunteer readers…!

Read for the Record celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For two decades, communities across the globe have come together around one powerful shared moment: the reading aloud of the same book on the same day to raise awareness for the critical importance of early literacy.

This year, RFTR is reading a book that beautifully reflects growth, care, and possibility: See Marcus Grow by Marcus Bridgewater; illustrated by Reggie Brown.

Dr. Anita Kaplan, Westlake’s Education Advisory Board Chair, has coordinated with the Literacy Coalition in PBC and Golden Grove Elementary School to organize 14 readers from the Cresswind Women’s Club to read See Marcus Grow!

Additionally, Westlake Mayor J.P. O’Connor is also reading along with Councilman Gary Werner and Marla Werner!

RFTR is one of Mayor O’Connor’s favorite causes. Mayor O’Connor is actually reading TWICE today: at Golden Grove Elementary and then he’s zoomin’ right over to H.L. Johnson Elementary. Mayor O’Connor met personally with Author Marcus Bridgewater, loves See Marcus Grow, and is looking forward to sharing it with the littles.

Mayor O’Connor appreciated Mr. Bridgwater’s take that growth doesn’t happen by force, but by fostering the right environment where it can happen (like in a garden! -WW) and feels these words reflect what we are building here in Westlake: conditions where our community can grow and flourish together.

Let’s shoot for having so many readers in 2027 that some of us get turned away!
