***As a rule, Westlake Wanderer (WW) does not cover Westlake Resident Master HOA events. These events are pay-to-play by our quarterly HOA dues and, often, with additional fees beyond said dues.
I, WW, never want to create confusion with the general public. So any Westlake events WW features (with a date and place!) are free and open to the public!
That said, it’s fun to get the word out from time to time about the great clubs, programs and events Westlake’s Master HOA hosts. So I’ll be featuring some of these in a series called “Master HOA Mondays” for the next few weeks.
And thanks to Lifestyle Director Robynn who truly does the work of at least three people, planning, coordinating and thinking up these events for Westlakers!***

CHESS CLUB
Every Friday at the Westlake Lodge, from 530-630PM, Chess Coaches Maria and Shandar show up ready to get kids in love with chess!
This is not an hour straight of playing chess. This is a social club that is a dynamic, interactive, educational hour of PLAY!
I saw a 10 year-old boy getting ready for a tournament and a 7 year-old girl playing symbolic, chess-specific sudoku games and a crossword puzzle! I could tell the hour passed them by.
Chess has its origins in 7th century India, it’s a game of strategic war (war, at its philosophical heart, never changes). Over time, the game has evolved into its modern version, with pawns, rooks and knights, that powerful queen, and, ultimately, that vulnerable targeted king!
Coach Maria, the owner of Leader Learning Center, loves chess and is trying to bring it to Palm Beach County Schools as an elective. Coach Maria says that chess brings benefits of all the core subjects: geography, history, literature, math… Let me add logic and philosophy after my weekend of learning more about the game.
Westlake’s Chess Club prioritizes kids from 5 to 17 years-old (i.e., K-12). They’ll learn everything about the game, including its verbiage, algebraic notation, how to keep score… Strategy. And, very importantly, how to lose (although Coach Maria says losing is actually a win, because how else do we learn but from our mistakes?).

Leader Learning Center’s Chess Club subscription is $99/month (or $102.96 after fees) with a 10% sibling discount. Parents are able to track their kids’ progress on a dashboard that also offers suggestions for improvement and plenty of puzzles! Sign in to your Westlake Master HOA to learn more and subscribe! Time is-a-ticking till next Friday’s club!
